This live webcam shows the Esplanade in Caen viewed from the BNP Paribas - Caen Hotel De Ville. Caen is known for its historical buildings and for the heavy fighting that took place there during World War Two.
In the Second World War, Caen was a key site during the Battle of Normandy, and suffered considerable destruction as a result of this. The city has preserved the memory by erecting a peace memorial. Caen was liberated in early July, a month after the Normandy landings that took place on 6 June 1944, mainly by British soldiers.
