The growth of the city was based on timber exports and fishing, but when those industries became less efficient, the people began to buy fish from Lofoten , which were dried on the rocks of Kristiansund. That kind of fish, known as "klippfisk" (fish from the rocks), later became the main industry of the city.
The city is served by the Hurtigruten ferry and the Kvernberget airport Since 1992, the town also opened a 5.2 kilometer long tunnel and two bridges to the mainland by road.
