Captain Cooke learned his seamanship here and tourism here started in the Georgian times. The area generally has warm summers and relatively mild winters and is very popular with tourists throughout the whole year.
Tourism and fishing is the mainstay of Whitby's economy and Whitby has a wide selection of guest houses, hotels, B&Bs caravans and self catering accomodations. This webcam is on the Quayside Restaurant. This is a really lovely quayside resort and well woth a visit.
The harbour has a total area of about 80 acres and is used by commercial, fishing and pleasure craft. There is Inshore fishing, particularly for crustaceans and line fish, which takes place along the coast. Lobsters, brown and velvet crabs are important to the local fishery.
From May to August, salmon is found in the Esk and small open boats are licensed to net these off the harbour entrance.
There are around 40 licensed angling party boats which can be hired for partys and other functions. The commercial catch here used to be herring but this has now been replaced by cod, haddock, and other fish which is caught within 12 miles of the coastline.
