The coast in this area of Cornwall can be a wild and rugged place with storms raging in from across the Atlantic. The Cove is partly protected from the winds and ocean currents by Mullion Island which is about 700 yards or so of to the southwest of the cove.
Between 1890 and 1892 and then between 1895 and 1897, a harbour consisting of two stone piers was constructed with financial assistance from Lord Robartes of Lanhydrock for coastal protection and to provide support and an economic base for fishermen, local farmers and local traders. These harbour walls were then maintained each year by local tradesmen.
In October of 1984 three locations within the harbour area were granted Grade II Listed status, and these were the two harbour walls or piers, the net loft which is also known as the harbour cottage and the Winch House.
