Newbury was the site of two Civil War battles, the First Battle of Newbury in 1643 and the Second Battle of Newbury in 1644 which reduced the nearby Donnington Castle to a ruin in the aftermath.
Newbury, in the west of the county of Berkshire in England, is situated on the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal. The town centre contains many buildings from the 17th century. Newbury was founded late in the eleventh century following the Norman invasion as a new borough, hence its name. Newbury Market place hosts many events each year and thousands flock there at Christmas for the lights and Christmas markets.
