Berlevag is close to the ocean which can be very rough in this region and the breakwaters which protect the village have been destroyed by the sea on several occasions.
Berlevg was occupied during World War II by the Germans, and in November 1944 the village was burned to the ground by the occupying German forces as they were forced to leave, but the village was soon rebuilt.
Berlevag is now a small active fishing municipality and there are two settlements, Berlevag with its fishing port and fishing village of Kongsfjord
